Application and Admissions Process Requirements: to be admitted to the
CNBC Training Program, students must
have been accepted into one of the affiliated doctoral programs (click here for list) at either the University of
Pittsburgh or Carnegie Mellon. For students
applying from outside the two universities, applications to
the doctoral program and the CNBC program may be submitted
simultaneously. Students may apply to more than one such
program and should follow the admissions procedures for
each. Students who are already pursuing a doctoral program at
one of the two universities may apply to the CNBC program at
any time. Application to the CNBC training program is
made by completing the online application
form. The application must be accompanied by a brief (2 page) essay
describing the student's interest in the field and his or her
goals in entering the program. Prior research experience will
be considered in the evaluation of applications and should be
described in the application statement. Applicants are
encouraged to apply by January
1st to facilitate coordination with the allied
departments, but later applications will be considered. The
CNBC will obtain the following additional materials from the
affiliated department to which the student is applying if not
supplied by the student directly: undergraduate transcript,
GRE scores (if required by the affiliated Ph.D. program), and
three letters of recommendation. Sending copies of these
items directly to the CNBC admissions office will speed
processing of the application. Where possible, finalists for
admission are invited to Pittsburgh for personal interviews
before the final admission decision. The CNBC works
with the degree-granting affiliated programs throughout the
admissions process, and a final decision on admission to the
CNBC program is made after the student has been admitted to
one of these programs.
