About the Lab
We belong to the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition, a joint program between the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. Our members are affiliated with CMU Computer Science and Psychology, and we are headed by Mike Lewicki.

Our interests lie in the areas of computational perception and theoretical neuroscience. We are particularly interested in computational principles underlying the representation and processing of complex real-world patterns.

In July 2009, Mike will be moving to Case Western Reserve University. This academic year he is on leave at the Institute for Advanced Study (Wissenschaftskolleg) in Berlin.

Some of the topics touched upon by our research
  • Computational theories of visual and auditory coding
  • Higher-order visual structure and invariant representations
  • Statistical structure of natural sounds and speech
  • Efficient coding of sounds, images, and video
  • Robust coding in neural populations
  • Spike-based representations
  • Independent component analysis and related methods
  • Applications in sound recognition and neural prosthetics
  • Algorithms for signal processing
