The Spatial Semantic Hierarchy (SSH) provides a robot-independentontology and logical theory for building topological maps oflarge-scale environments online. Existing SSH implementations makevery limited use of perceptual information and thus create manycandidate maps. Metrical mapping implementations capture detailedknowledge about local small-scale space but do not handle largeenvironments well due to computational limitations and global metricaluncertainty. In this paper, we extend the SSH to utilize bettersensory information by incorporating information derived from localmetrical models into the large-scale space framework. This newextension of the Spatial Semantic Hierarchy uses local topologyobtained from local perceptual models to constrain a globaltopological map search.
