Benjamin Kuipers, Patrick Beeson, Joseph Modayil, and Jefferson Provost. Bootstrap learning of foundational representations. In Proceedings of the AAAI Spring Symposium on Developmental Robotics, Stanford, CA, 2005.
To be autonomous, intelligent robots must learn the foundations ofcommonsense knowledge from their own sensorimotor experience in theworld. We describe four recent research results that show how a robotlearning agent can bootstrap from the ``blooming buzzing confusion''of the pixel level to a higher-level ontology including distinctivestates, places, actions, and objects.
