Compilation instructions for CORTEX 5.95

Here are instructions for compiling CORTEX that worked for me with version 5.95 of the code. Note that paths may vary on your system, and you may have different results if you use different operating systems or compiler versions.

Instructions for Compiling CORTEX 5.95

• For the DOS wcsend program:
  • You must compile the DOS wcsend program on a Windows 95 or 98 system, NOT 2000 or XP.
  • Download the file watcom-c-11.0c.exe from www.openwatcom.org - a direct FTP link is here.
  • Install. Make sure you choose both Windows 95/98/NT/2000 and DOS when it asks what host operating systems you want support for, and both 32-bit DOS and 32-bit Windows when it asks what target operating systems you want support for. Otherwise, the defaults are OK.
  • You need to copy the DOS4GW.EXE from the \REMOTE32 directory of Cortex, and put it into the \source\w_csend (or whatever the source directory is for the version of Cortex you're compiling)
  • Add the line "DEVICE=WDEBUG.386" (or, the full path "DEVICE=C:\WATCOM\BINW\WDEBUG.386" if necessary) to the [386Enh] section of the C:\windows\system.ini file.
  • Make sure the following lines are in your autoexec.bat:

    SET PATH=%PATH%;C:\WATCOM\BINW;C:\WATCOM\BINNT 
    SET INCLUDE=C:\WATCOM\H;C:\WATCOM\MFC\INCLUDE;C:\WATCOM\H\NT 
    SET WATCOM=C:\WATCOM 
    SET EDPATH=C:\WATCOM\EDDAT 
    

  • Start the compiler by running the IDE.EXE file in the \binw directory. Open the project file you wish to use (.wpj) and compile using "Make all".

• For the Windows DXrecv program:
  • You need a copy of Microsoft Visual C++ 5.0 to compile this program (other versions may work, I haven't tried them). This compilation can be done on a machine running Windows XP.
  • Download a copy of the Microsoft DirectX 7 Software Development Kit. It used to be available from Microsoft here, but that link is now dead. If you have trouble finding it, email me and I can help out. Install the SDK to C:\mssdk (or your own choice of directory).
  • Run VC++ and use the command "Open Workspace" in the "File" menu to open DXrecv.dsw.
  • Go to the "Tools" menu and choose "Options". Click on the "Directories" tab and choose "Include files" from the pull-down menu on the right. Make sure you have the following lines in the list (making adjustments for paths on your system):

  • Now choose "Library files" from the pull-down menu, and make sure you have these:

    C:\mssdk\lib
    C:\Program Files\DevStudio\VC\LIB
    C:\Program Files\DevStudio\VC\MFC\lib
    C:\CORTEX\DXSOURCE\LIB32MSC
    C:\dxmedia\lib
    

  • Comment out the following line in soundrem.cpp:

    dsbdesc.dwFlags = DSBCAPS_STATIC |  // just make it a static buffer
                 DSBCAPS_CTRLDEFAULT |
         DSBCAPS_GETCURRENTPOSITION2 |
                 DSBCAPS_GLOBALFOCUS;
    

  • Now you should be able to use the "F7" key (or the "Build" menu) to compile DXrecv.exe
