The work contained in Chapters 3 and 4 of this thesis has previously been published (Smith et al., 2002). Portions of the surround suppression data used for Chapter 6 were collected prior to the start of the cross-orientation suppression project. Some of the surround suppression timing results have been separately reported by Cavanaugh (2001), and are being prepared for publication (Bair et al., 2003).
