Wolf Rocks – Forbes State Forest, PA

Trail Summary

Wolf Rocks is a short, but challenging run in Forbes State Forest.  And by challenging, I mean destroying my rims and wishing for rear suspension.  Chances are you will hurt yourself eventually so just make sure to stay away from the rattlers while you’re picking yourself back up.  As far as I know, there are no wolves (definitely know there are however plenty of black bears) so the key word is ROCKS.  No matter which route you take, you get a very nice scenic drive through Western Pennsylvania (this route applies to 4 other rides—3 use the same trailhead as this ride).  You exit the turnpike at Donegal and take 711 for a while (couple of big hills and “downtown” Donegal) until there is a sign warning you about an intersection.  You take a right at this intersection (Country Club Rd).  Take this road down the hill as it runs right into PA-381.  Then, take a right on Linn Run Rd and drive up the nasty hill through Linn Run State Park (slowly getting repaved) and Forbes State Forest.  Continue straight (slight left) at the intersection and park at the picnic area (back lot for this trail and front lot for other rides).  Alternatively, you can take PA-381 for the whole drive from PA-31 (see picture above).  You can go in either direction on the trail, but Wolf Rocks Loop is the nastier section.  There will be plenty of people there, but most are smart and are hiking.  Some parts of the loop section might require you to carry your bike a lot depending on your skills.  There is a nice view at the end of a short trail at the end of the loop.  Then you can take the Wolf Rocks Trail back, which is much easier.  Even though it is only 4 miles and is flat except for a couple small hills on the loop, the rocks lead to a bit of a workout.   (more info)
