Located just north of Pittsburgh, the Slippery Rock Gorge
offers a pleasant and surprising alternative to a Laurel Highlands day trip. Like the Laurel Highlands, you will find many hikers
and kayakers along and on the Slippery Rock River. The hike requires a shuttle or is a decent
out-and-back day hike. The trail
starts off very wet and rocky, followed by a few climbs and descents in
and out of the gorge. Once you
enter the park from US-19 (via PA-488 or 422 & I-79) head to Cheeseman Rd to the river. You start along the river on the
Eckert Bridge (look for the kayakers) and head out west on the north
side of the river. If you shuttle
you need to drop the other car off on the west end of the trail
(Hell’s Hollow). You can
also explore the mill and covered bridge via a short eastern route on
the north or south side (McConnel’s
Mill & Kildoo Trails) of the river where
you find most of the rapids and kayakers. (more
