"Fluorescence-based quantitative synapse analysis for cell-type specific connectomics"

We developed genetically-encoded reagents for fluorescence-synapse labeling and connectivity analysis in brain tissue, using a fluorogen-activating protein (FAP)- or YFP-coupled, postsynaptically-localized neuroligin-1 targeting sequence (FAP/YFPpost). We found that inhibitory inputs from fluorescently-labeled parvalbumin and somatostatin neurons are intermingled across the proximal dendrites, and that inputs from vasoactive-intestinal peptide neurons are rare for L2 pyramidal neurons.

Mouse over here for a brief summary or click to open article in a new tab.we report the development of the polydopamine (PDA)-poly (sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSB) co-deposition method to coat the electrode surface for neural implant applications. Results demonstrated a stable and potent anti-fouling performance with the coating in vitro. In vivo evaluation revealed a significant reduction in inflammatory cell recruitment and activation, glial scar formation, and blood-brain barrier breach in coated implants compared to the controls after one week, while the neuronal distribution is not affected. This finding supports future investigation aimed at using PDA-PSB coatings to enhance the duration of neural electrode functionality.

We identify specific circuitry involving the hippocampus and ventromedial prefrontal cortex that shows marked age-related increases in connectivity strength, and whose maturation is linked to improvements on tasks assessing higher order cognitive functions.

Our results suggest that this corpus has evidential value, although there are hints of p-hacking in a few parts of the x-phi corpus.

Despite such an amazing body of empirical data, it remains unclear how the production system handles co-activated items. In this paper, we review this evidence in a systematic way, and point out three common problems in the interpretations attached to these data. We then discuss alternative approaches which might be more fruitful in understanding the links between such data and the processes of spreading activation, selection, monitoring and control in language production.

"Neuroimaging Studies of Antidepressant Placebo Effects: Challenges and Opportunities"

Mouse over here for a brief summary or click to open article in a new tab.Over the last two decades, neuroscientists have used antidepressant placebo probes to examine the biological mechanisms implicated in expectancies of mood improvement.However, findings from these studies have yet to elucidate a model-based theory that would explain the mechanisms through which antidepressant expectancies evolve to induce persistent mood changes. Compared to other fields, the development of experimental models of antidepressant placebo effects faces significant challenges, such as the delayed mechanism of action of conventional antidepressants and the complex internal dynamics of mood. Still, recent neuroimaging studies of antidepressant placebo effects have shown remarkable similarities to those observed in other disciplines (e.g., placebo analgesia), such as placebo-induced increased µ-opioid signaling and blood-oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) responses in areas involved in cognitive control, the representation of expected values and reward and emotional processing. This review will summarize these findings and the challenges and opportunities that arise from applying methodologies used in the field of placebo analgesia into the field of antidepressant placebo effects.

(2019) also argue prematurely for the end of cognitive science. I discuss problematic analytic features in the application of hierarchical cluster analysis to journal citation data. On the conceptual side, I argue that the research programs framework of Lakatos may not be so wisely applied to cognitive science. Further, the diversity of structure in cognitive science departments may represent a rational, strategic adaptation by an interdisciplinary department to cognitive and other resource challenges rather than the sign of low progress on a discipline.

Two bilingual groups performed a translation recognition task: Mandarin–English classroom bilinguals who acquired their dominant language (Mandarin) from birth and their non-dominant language (English) post-puberty through formal classroom instruction, and Mandarin–English heritage bilinguals who acquired their non-dominant language (Mandarin) at home from birth but became more dominant in another language (English) through society and peers.
